If you would like to enjoy a right compromise between history, art and nature, this is the ideal tour for you. You will be able to experience the atmosphere of medieval towns, refined local cuisine and relaxing countryside of Tuscia region.
Considering the number of places to visit and some other possible stops, we recommend this tour to be done by car.
We usually meet with the clients at their hotel. Then, we head up to Viterbo, awesome medieval style town. Normally, it takes an hour and half to arrive in Viterbo. We drive around the city walls and stop near St. Pietro Gate, from which we access the old town by walk.
The so-called heart of Viterbo with the Cathedral of St. Lorenzo and the Palace of the Popes, which is the real destination of our visit is just 15-20 minutes ahead. Tourists always get enchanted by the medieval quarter with its characteristic tufa houses, cobble stone pavements and narrow streets alternated with staircases here and there. Viterbo preserves so carefully every single corner that you can easily feel out of time while wandering around. You will love it.
After the visit of the centre, we go back to the car and move to Civita di Bagnoregio. It takes half an hour. Once we get there we need to park the car down the hill because the small village of Civita is only for pedestrians. You will have to go through a long bridge, the only connection between Civita and the outer world. The surroundings are just a-ma-zing!
An hour to complete the tour of Civita is more than enough. At this point of the day we’d better look for a comfortable place to eat if we don’t want to miss lunch. Countryside people eat early and restaurants don’t serve lunch/dinner at any time unlike the big cities.
Transfer to Orvieto for lunch and visit of the town right after. You will be impressed by the atmosphere of Orvieto as well. Besides the imposing Duomo (third gothic church in Italy after Milan and Siena), the Bishop’s Palace, the Townhall, the Market Square and the “Moro” Tower too create a magical effect, typical of medieval towns of Umbria region.
Some free time for shopping in the elegant shops and boutiques scattered through the maze of the centre before leaving is always appreciated by the clients.
Get on the highway from Orvieto back to Rome and in less than 2 hours we will be at the hotel to complete the tour around 18:00.
